Autism Safety-Works Newsletter, November 6, 2017

Welcome:

The intention for this newsletter is to share and give. Sharing ideas and strategies with you the student, the young adult seeking employment, the parent, professionals, and business leaders. As an adult with Autism Spectrum or other disability there is so much uncertainty about how to make progress toward one’s dreams.

Many individuals with Autism Spectrum suffer high anxiety, fear interactions with people and entering unfamiliar settings. Often they sink into depression, and pursue activities that give them a false security of safety in the home feeling protected from the outside world. But when these habits continue they only get stronger, making it more and more difficult to turn the situation around into a safe direction.

There is good news. We can fill the gaps with real possibilities that promote:

-knowing oneself and one’s strengths.

-jobs and career that are well matched one’s strengths and interests.

-tools that diminish anxiety and promote ease for capability and participation.

-community membership, and emotional adaptation.

All angles are considered in topics: employment, daily living, well-being, and acceptance.

Join me to push the conversation along making the journey a little lighter for all of us.

4. Our Manifesto

I love sharing inspired thoughts and ideas that I  learned and still learning with my autistic son Trent. He is now 40 years old. The years are flying by fast. The journey continues with Trent in living his interdependent lifestyle:

-Daily living as a community member and an artist.

-Unique authentic self-expression using his strengths and talents.

-Discovering the use of personal tools that still enables him to have ease in new situations and with new unfamiliar people.

-Contentment to live his interdependent life in his own home, now for 17 years.

The ideas for us unfolded in good times and in times of desperation when doors closed and nothing positive could be seen. I despise the feeling of being backed in a corner. I am sure many parents and young adults can relate to me. When I found solutions I believe they appeared because I kept looking and stood on my the rich principals of quality of life for people with disabilities. I accepted the outcome may look a bit different but if it still met Trent’s needs and his personal preferences, it was workable.

I believe the true life stories are valuable that young adults and their families shared with me in my research for the last 15 years. They sought ways to find meaning in their lives and strived toward self satisfaction in employment. None of us should ever feel we are backed into a corner. I often feel vulnerable to the harsh realities of this world and I know you do too. I have to believe there is always a solution. I learned possibilities can unfold even in the darkest of night.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum can teach all of us to better understand challenges, to see unique strengths and abilities that can be applied to a job or career, and to see possibilities to that can unfold even in the darkest of night. The goal is to make progress toward goals and dreams.

I am committed to sharing these stories and action tools that guide people with autism to live their lives fully and safely. Individuals with Autism Spectrum can teach all of us to better understand challenges and to see unique strengths and abilities that can be applied to a job or career.

I want to hear from you. Sharing your ideas will help all of us.
